Friends say the actor informed Nuttall, best known for her previous roles in Emmerdale and Downtown Abbey, of his desire to end the marriage shortly before Christmas.
But the actress, who shares two children with Buchan, suspected her husband had strayed after discovering an intimate purchase before Christmas, along with receipts for unexplained London hotel stays, when he was supposed to be working on-site.
said a source Sun: ‘The penny began to fall over a period of time. She was away a lot, which wasn’t unusual given the nature of her job, but at one point Amy realized that she had been staying in hotels very close to home and wondered why.

The Downton Abbey star, who was so “crushed” by the end of her marriage that she has been crying almost every day, struggled to smile while running errands in Buckinghamshire.
The mother-of-two bundled up against the cold in a navy puffer jacket and styled her hair back into a thick bun.
Speaking to MailOnline about the split, Nuttall fought back tears, confessing: ‘I can’t talk about it. Sorry, I can’t say anything.
