Andre Onana tells Man United fans to expect him to take even MORE risks in goal this season – after Erik ten Hag brought in new goalkeeping coach from Ajax

André Onana has told Manchester United fans he is prepared to take even more risks as a goalkeeper this season.

One of the main reasons United signed the Cameroonian goalkeeper from Internazionale last summer was Onana’s ability to play wider, passing from the back, coming off his goal line and even playing outside the penalty area.

Things didn’t always go to plan in the early days, with Onana being beaten from the halfway line on his home debut against Lens and being lucky not to be awarded a penalty at the end of his first Premier League appearance against Wolves at Old Trafford.

But the 28-year-old recovered after a slow start to play in all but one of United’s 54 games, as they ended the season by winning the FA Cup against Manchester City at Wembley.

Onana heads into his second season at United full of confidence as ‘the best goalkeeper in the world’ and has warned fans he is prepared to risk even more this season.

“Yes, I am,” he said, laughing. “I think you’re going to see the same thing this season, because I’m taking a lot of risks. I can tell you that right now! Be prepared, because it’s going to be (like that) this season, trust me! I’m going to enjoy it even more when this season starts.

‘The best team in the world takes risks. Building from the back, recognizing things, situations, when the opponent jumps one-on-one or when they push with three or four.

“So for me it’s important to acknowledge those kinds of things and make the best decision for the team. I’ll take a lot of responsibility and I think my back is huge to carry it all, right? I think it’s going to be fun this season.”

Onana insists that he has learned to deal with criticism after his difficult start at United, and admits that expectations must be high at a club of such stature.

“Yes, I think I felt at home six months ago,” he added. “It’s not always easy to get used to a new country, a new league and new people, but my teammates helped me a lot, so I’m happy.

“Maybe it was a bit strange for me at the beginning because I wasn’t used to the country and the formation, but I feel good. It’s a nice place to be and my teammates, the staff and the fans make it very easy for me, so I’m happy to be here.

‘As a Manchester United player it is right to be criticised if you don’t win, because at the end of the day that is part of your job.

“We are here for the goal and I come here as the best goalkeeper in the world. It is normal that they are strict with me because they expect a lot from me.

Onana finished the season strongly and heads into the new campaign full of confidence as the side hope to improve on their eighth place in the Premier League.

“But at the same time, they give me a lot of love. You just have to balance that out and critics are good sometimes because you have to look back at what you did that wasn’t good, so for me, I take it positively.”

Although beating City in the cup final at Wembley saved Erik ten Hag’s job, United finished eighth in the Premier League and Onana knows the club must aim much higher.

“As the best club in the country, the perspective is always high,” he said. “It is to win everything, fight for every game and be more consistent. We have already shown in the previous games that we can beat anyone, so we are going to fight to win everything.

“It’s important for us. We know what we stand for, we represent a huge emblem. It’s not easy playing for Manchester United because the expectations are always higher.

‘I don’t think last season was good enough because I’ve just played in the Champions League final and the FA Cup is important, but not enough for Manchester United.

“The goals have to be really high and we’re going for it this season. We’re working really hard, we’re really positive. I’m really excited about the new signings. I think I’m really positive about the way my teammates are working hard every day.”

Onana is getting used to the new goalkeeping coach, after United replaced Richard Hartis with Jelle ten Rouwelaar. Jelle came over from Ajax to encourage the team to play even more from the back.

“It’s very good, honestly,” Onana added. “I also had a very good relationship with Richard, he was a very good guy and helped us a lot, especially when I came here and had difficulties. He was there for me, so I thank him for everything he did for me and I think all the goalkeepers were very happy with him.

‘Now the club has decided to sign someone else and we are working together and we are happy to work with Jelle.

“He has his own way of working. It’s fun, we have fun and enjoy it, and the most important thing is that the team wins. So we are ready to face anyone.”
