Andre Onana takes the blame for Man United’s defeat to Bayern after his HOWLER… as the £47m summer signing says he ‘let the team down’ and admits he has a lot to prove after his ‘not so good’ start at his new club

Andre Onana has raised his hand over the horrific mistake that set Manchester United on the path to defeat in a dramatic seven-goal clash at the Allianz Arena.

United were ahead against Bayern Munich when Onana allowed an effort from Manchester City winger Leroy Sane to slip past him.

United’s new £47.2million goalkeeper has now scored 14 goals in six games since replacing David de Gea, and admitted it is not enough.

“It’s a difficult situation for me, I let the team down. It’s because of me that we didn’t win this match,” said Onana who insisted on facing the media after the defeat of United in Group A.

“We started very well and after my mistake we lost control of the match. I still have a lot to prove (to the fans). My start was not as good, not as I wanted.

Andre Onana allowed Leroy Sané’s weak effort to give Bayern Munich the lead.

He admitted his start to life at Manchester United was nowhere near good enough.

“They didn’t create any chances, with their first shot on target I made a mistake and the team went down. We fought until the end but I have to admit that we didn’t win thanks to to me.

“But that’s the life of a goalkeeper and we have to move on. It’s a difficult time and we have to be together and learn from our mistakes.

After seeing his side suffer their fourth defeat in six matches this season, manager Erik ten Hag insisted Onana should not take all the blame.

“In football there will always be mistakes, so don’t make things worse,” Ten Hag said.

“Of course he knows he has to stop the ball, but the way Sane passed it can’t be.

“We have to support him on the pitch, not just in life, we have to help him. It doesn’t just matter for André, it matters for all the players. They have to understand that they are in the same boat and that they need to be on the same wavelength to get results.

“When you score three goals in Munich you have to take a point and you have to look in the mirror because the goals were easy gifts.”
