Manchester United endured another Champions League horror show as a 3-3 draw with Galatasaray left their last-16 hopes hanging by a thread.

Erik ten Hag’s team is staring down the barrel of European elimination after throwing away a 2-0 and 3-1 lead in a cauldron-like atmosphere on Wednesday evening.

United received the classic ‘Welcome to Hell’ reception from the feverish home fans with a huge banner at RAMS Park reading: ‘Your Nightmare Is Back Again.’

So it turned out, as United had to beat Bayern Munich on matchday six in two weeks’ time and hope that Galatasaray and Copenhagen drew in the other match to slip through.

Although United did not produce their worst performance of the season in Istanbul, they were once again let down by goalkeeper Andre Onana’s calamities.

Onana was to some extent to blame for all three of Galatasaray’s goals and it was no wonder that French newspaper L’Equipe gave him a paltry three out of ten in their player ratings.

United’s outfield players were not spared either: Antony, Sofyan Amrabat and Victor Lindelof all scored just four.

The team average came in at just 4.9, while Ten Hag’s team once again underperformed when it mattered in Europe’s leading competition.

Rasmus Hojlund, Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka all averaged five out of 10, with goalscorers Alejandro Garnacho and Scott McTominay getting six and captain Bruno Fernandes the highest score with seven.

Galatasaray was not considered better than United by L’Equipe, with an average of 4.9.

Tanguy Ndombele matched Onana with the unenviable score of three out of ten, while four players received a score of four.

Hakim Ziyech was named the game’s best player with eight out of 10 after scoring twice to set up Galatasaray’s equalizer for Kerem Akturkoglu.

Despite his latest series of mistakes, Ten Hag tried to absolve the Cameroon goalkeeper of any blame, saying: ‘We win and lose together. He (Onana) is fine. It’s not about individuals. Individual mistakes in football can make a difference and you take responsibility for that, but it’s always about the team.

‘All the players in this squad deserve to play for Manchester United because they are brilliant players.

‘We are very happy with our goalkeeping group. They are doing very well and have good performance. They have to push each other.’

The Cameroonian was beaten by two free-kicks from Hakim Ziyech, which sparked their late comeback
