Andre Onana gets second yellow card against Coventry, but the Man United goalkeeper avoided a red card due to little-known rule which also helped Emiliano Martinez in Europe

Andre Onana received a second yellow card during Manchester United’s penalty shootout against Coventry on Sunday, but was not dismissed.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper was initially cautioned in the 85th minute for delaying the restart from a goal kick as Coventry tried to find an equalizer at 3-2.

He was also shown a yellow card in the penalty shootout for arguing with referee Robert Jones, but was able to stay on the field.

IFAB rule 10.3 states that bookings received during the regular match will not carry through to penalty shootouts, but players who pick up a red card cannot return to participate.

It also means that Onana is not suspended for the FA Cup final against rivals Manchester City on May 25.

The same rule received a little more attention when Emiliano Martinez was not dismissed during Aston Villa’s Europa Conference League win over Lille, despite receiving a yellow card in the match and penalty shootout.

However, Villa’s Argentinian shot-stopper will miss the first leg of the semi-final after picking up three yellow cards during the tournament, including the two in Lille.

Martinez said after the match on Thursday: ‘It’s all about reputation because the other goalkeeper did exactly the same thing [time wasting in normal play].

‘I got booked after half an hour and we were losing the match, so I don’t know what the referee wants from me.

‘Then there was no ball on the penalty spot during the shoot out. I asked for a ball from the ball boy and I get a yellow card. I just don’t understand the rules.’

Manchester United defeated Coventry City 4–2 in a penalty shootout, but only after letting a three-goal lead slip away in the final twenty minutes of the match.

Manchester City await the final on May 25, which will be a repeat of last year’s showpiece, which was won by Pep Guardiola’s side as part of their treble season.
