Ana’s SNL debut received lukewarm reviews from critics.
The protector‘s Zach Vasquez labeled the episode as ‘unsatisfactory’, noting, ‘While this wasn’t one of the very worst episodes of the season, this one didn’t have much to make up for. There were no standout skits and the only lengthy laughter was during Sherman’s brief Weekend Update segment.
De Armas was fine for the most part, though between this and the previews for her upcoming movie Ghosted, it doesn’t really seem like comedy is her forte. Either way, the show didn’t give her much to work with. Neither do we, by the way.’
Paste Magazine’s Dennis Perkins said he was “bored” watching the show, writing, “I’m not putting all this on the Armas – this was easily the worst episode of Season 48 of Saturday Night Live, a collection of half-written skits, profoundly unnecessary repetitive bits, and an overall chore to sit through.
It didn’t even have the benefit of being a train wreck to stare at in guilt and fascination. I was mostly bored.’
In the meantime Entertainment tonightAndy Hoglund claimed that Ana’s monologue was “Understandably clumsy and short.”
Trae DeLellis van AV club however, praised her efforts, writing that, “Adding sketch comedy to her résumé, de Armas proves to be a deft first-time host.”
