Americans are confused by Rose Byrne’s ‘crazy’ Australian accent in new series Platonic: ‘Nicole Kidman doesn’t sound like that’
Rose Byrne’s new Apple TV+ series, Platonic, is a hit with audiences and critics alike.
But many American viewers are confused by the Aussie star’s accent, which has become a mix of American and Australian over the many years the Sydney-born actress has worked in the United States.
In the comedy, which stars the 43-year-old alongside Seth Rogan, Rose uses her natural accent, unlike most of her roles where she played an American character.
After the series premiered this week, crowds of American viewers took to Twitter to share their confusion over how the actress speaks.
“I’m so taken aback by Rose Byrne’s accent. Why does it keep changing in the middle of a sentence?’ one person asked.

“Trying to watch Platonic and it’s so distracting how Rose Byrne’s accent keeps bouncing back and forth between American and Australian,” another tweeted.
“Why do you say Byrne only has an American accent 60% of the time? So weird! Do you think actors know when they revert to their own accents?’ said another.
“I want to watch Platonic, but I’m too distracted by Rose Byrne’s accent bouncing around,” someone else chimed in.

“I’m watching Platonic: what’s that weird ass accent that makes Rose Byrne have me googling ‘Rose Byrne is Australian?’ Did we know this?’ asked a viewer.
“This isn’t what Nicole Kidman sounds like… I think she slips in and out of American and Australian and it sounds crazy lol,” they added.

One fan had a statement, writing, “The Australian accent is the hardest to emulate, but the easiest to lose. Rose Byrne’s accent in Platonic is ubiquitous – a result of her being an Aussie who has lived and worked in the US for many years.
“My favorite example is when she says ‘can’t’ in both directions in one sentence.”
It’s no surprise that Rose has picked up an American accent since she first moved to New York in 1999 when she was just 20 to pursue her career on the big screen.
The Bad Neighbors actress lives in Brooklyn with her partner Bobby Cannavale and their two sons, Rocco and Rafael.
Platonic stars Rose and Seth Rogan as former best friends, Sylvia and Will, who reconnect after Will divorces.
The show received critical acclaim, scoring a 92% fresh rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
