American woman who moved from California to the north of England reveals FOUR huge culture shocks

An American has used TikTok to share the biggest cultural differences she has noticed since moving to northern England from California.

The video of @ashlee4ever was seen by more than 70,000 people in less than a day.

In the clip, the Californian revealed she moved to the Greater Manchester town of Bolton to be with her boyfriend – and there are some culture shocks she wasn’t expecting.

She started the video by saying: ‘I’m in the north of England, outside Manchester, and it’s funny how I feel like no one hates England more than the English.

“Every time I meet someone and they find out I’m from California, their first reaction is, ‘Why are you here?’

Viewers also found it hilarious that TikToker decided to move to Bolton, with users writing ‘I’ve never heard of people moving to Bolton’ and ‘CA to Bolton is wild lmao’.

Another shocked Brit wondered: ‘Bolton?? I live in Leigh and we had an American living in our town hall. I couldn’t understand why they had to travel all that way to live in Leigh.’

She then explained the main things she noticed about the British way of life that differed from her experiences in the US.

Buying food

Ashlee revealed that the first big distinction she noticed is what you can or can’t get at the grocery store.

She explained, “Probably the biggest culture shock for me has been grocery shopping. There are some similar brands, but they have different flavors.”

Adding that she is used to larger quantities than the British have to offer:

‘My friend and I tried to buy some ice cream bars the other day, but they only come in packs of three or four.

‘I’m used to packs of twelve or something like that. Three or four, what should that mean for me? Are you joking?

“That’s going to take me a day and a half between the two of us.” After that debacle I felt so homesick and started crying.”

Lack of clothes dryers

The second thing TikToker is having trouble coming to terms with is the perceived lack of clothes dryers.

She said: ‘This isn’t for every British household but a lot of places that are rented out – they don’t have dryers to dry their clothes which to me is so incredibly stupid because this is the wettest country and the s*** is taking Let it dry on the drying rack for two to three days.

“Invest in some dryers, people, come on. What are we doing?’

However, some commenters were confused by her claim, with one Brit writing: ‘Bro we have dryers’ and another adding: ‘We have plenty of dryers. We just expect people to buy their own devices.”

Others agreed with the American, with one viewer saying: ‘We have enough dryers. We just expect people to buy their own appliances,” and another says, “I don’t know anyone who has a dryer.”

Unpredictable weather

Next up is something that British people will be used to and that anyone moving to Britain should expect: unpredictable weather.

Ashlee explained, “The weather was also difficult to get used to, being from California.

‘It’s not a constant rain though, it will drizzle, the next minute it starts pouring, then it stops and starts again.

‘You should always be prepared for the rain.’

The quality of the products

Finally, the Californian complained about the quality of the produce we have here in the UK, and the way it is stored.

She said: “Also, when I go back to the supermarkets, literally everything is wrapped in plastic – the produce and everything.

‘Being from California, I didn’t know we had such good quality products. I’ve really noticed the difference here.’

Despite the minor differences, she concluded the video by saying that overall, she and her boyfriend are having a “really great time, finally in the same country, in the same city, under the same roof.”

Adding: ‘Everyone has been really great, I’ve adapted quite well. Of course I sometimes feel homesick, but I’m really looking forward to this trip.’
