American TikToker stuns Brits with her near-perfect South London accent – as people joke she must have been born in Southwark
It's a challenge that has brought down even the most decorated of Hollywood actors, the British accent, for generations.
Stars from Dick Van Dyke to Anne Hathaway have faced criticism and ridicule from viewers over the years for their attempts to adopt a British accent, leading Brits to wonder if Americans will ever be able to successfully emulate the British tone.
However, a woman from the US, who claims to have lived there almost her 'whole life' after being born in Nigeria, is leaving Brits in awe with her near-perfect impression of south London.
TikToker Mona, based in Maryland, posted a video on her channel in which she slips in and out of a typical South London accent, leaving viewers completely baffled.
Mona explained that consuming much of British pop culture led her to copy the accent of native Britons, but admitted that she was vague about local language use. Nevertheless, viewers have questioned her true accent after being so convinced by her London impersonation.
Mona left fans in shock and even fooled them into thinking she was British herself
But the TikToker, born in Nigeria, is actually from Maryland, USA
In an impeccable emulation of South London twang, Mona explained: 'Of course I start copying them, sometimes without even knowing it. Do you understand what I mean?'
Mona continued, “The gone the voice sounds, I really like it. Especially when I look…” before dramatically switching to her American accent for almost a moment to finish the sentence: “Like, videos and stuff like that.
“Like makeup videos. I'm like, oh, execute.'
She then switched back to her London accent and said, “I'm watching this podcast, they're British people, so as I listen to them I start talking like them.”
She confessed, “The accent might not be that good, I live in Maryland. I just do it (the accent) too often. IIf I were a British babe, it's long.'
As viewers were shocked by the accuracy of her impression, they urged her to take the plunge and move to the Big Smoke – as she had already lowered the accent.
Others went a step further and speculated where she was born – some suggesting her birthplace was Guy's Hospital in Southwark.
TikTok users were stunned at how similar Mona sounded to the native Brits from South London
One Londoner said: 'As a London babe you sound legit,' and another agreed: 'Woah, yeah, that's right, except when you said podcast.'
Another was in disbelief: 'Girl, you're from South London,' and another said: 'I refuse to believe you're not a British import.'
Another user interjected: “No, the accent is banging, I've never heard an American nail our accent like that.”
And another praised her signature London pronunciation of 'Dyaknawawhat I mean'.
Other Americans confessed that they had tried the accent before: “Omg, this is what I think I sound like.”
Another joked: 'Me after a few seasons of Love Island', and another also found that watching British television shows like Skins helped develop a better accent.'
One said: 'As a Londoner it's a good thing I was born in Guys Hospital.'
