She said: 'It's amazing and you know these are the kind of films that we're told don't work, they don't travel, they're niche or special interest films.
“And yet here we are and this strange, delightful film has disproved much of that. What has it brought me personally?
“I feel like at some point I stopped expecting the phone to ring and for a brilliant, Academy Award-nominated director to call and say, 'I wrote a part for you!'
“I've been in this industry for over 20 years, and as a Latina actress, as a woman of color, as someone who has been pigeonholed into certain jobs and boxes from the beginning of my career, even with success there are opportunities to succeed. really branching out and doing things that aren't so tightly labeled are few and far between.
'I thought I should do that for myself, I should produce. It was incredibly unexpected to get a call from Greta (Gerwig).
“She had written the Latina character, but that wasn't part of her journey. It was more about her being a human being in a make-believe world.”

“Yes, there was Jennifer Lopez, Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz, a few Latinas you could point to, but that wasn't me either. I wasn't a beautiful sexpot woman!'
