AMD’s RDNA 3 mobile flagship could be incredibly fast – and matched by Nvidia RTX 4090 laptop GPU?

AMD’s next-gen laptop graphics cards powered by RDNA 3 could indeed be very fast, according to the latest rumors – and Nvidia’s Lovelace mobile GPUs have also been spotted in a new leak, and will presumably be just as fast or thereabouts.

All of this comes from a few Twitter regulars: First, Greymon55 delivered a simple tweet (spotted by Wccftech (opens in new tab)) consisting of a laptop icon that says it’s roughly equivalent to the RX 6950 XT, meaning the top RX 7000 notebook GPU will have similar levels of performance to AMD’s hefty desktop graphics card.

Kopite7kimi then chimed in on another thread on Twitter — a post revealing Nvidia’s purported next-gen laptop GPU lineup (we’ll get to that) — saying the RX 7900M, which is clearly what the leaker thinks. that will be the top dog RDNA 3 mobile GPU (apparently based on the Navi 32 chip), offers performance in terms of the RTX 3090 desktop card.

Add your own spice generously here, of course, but in other words, these leakers are both saying the same thing, as the RX 6950 XT is in the same performance margin as the RTX 3090. (At least in many games – they trade blows here and there , but the big picture is one of them that is very similar overall, at least with rasterization, meaning ray-traced graphics are not taken into account).

Analysis: Seriously impressive stuff – and the same goes for Nvidia’s next-gen?

If this is true – and that is quite a giant if, because this is a big old claim – the flagship RDNA 3 laptop could be something very special. Offering RTX 3090 / RX 6950 XT performance in a gaming notebook early(ish) next year would be a huge leap forward for those who like to play games on the go; indeed we cannot underestimate how much a step on such a boost would be. To put things in perspective, don’t forget that AMD’s current mobile flagship features the performance levels of an RX 6700 XT.

The other interesting element here is that Nvidia leak – again, keep your skeptic hat on very tight – showing that Team Green is reportedly running an RTX 4090 laptop GPU. That’s notable because we haven’t seen an RTX 3090 for mobile (just a 3080 Ti), but this flagship GPU won’t use the desktop version’s AD102 graphics chip – that would just be too hot to handle – it’ll be bumped to an AD103. But that, of course, will still offer a major performance boost over the existing flagship 3080 Ti laptop graphics card.

Trying to guess where the performance might land compared to the rumored RX 7900M is obviously a pretty big question at this stage, but it’s certainly possible that an RTX 4090 mobile GPU (based on AD103 as mentioned) could reach RTX 3090 performance levels or almost it. That is to say, the battle of the next-gen laptop flagships from both AMD and Nvidia will likely be a very close run, and however you roll it, gamers will get excellent levels of performance from these respective GPUs from Team Green and Team Red.

Keep your fingers crossed that both speculations will come true then, but right now they certainly represent promising signs for the near future of gaming laptops.
