AMD RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT GPUs are here – with a few drawbacks

Soon after, they leaked onlineAMD officially unveiled its latest gaming graphics cards – the Radeon RX 7700 XT and the Radeon RX 7800 XT at Gamescom 2023. The gap between the 7600XT and the 7900XTX is finally filled.

These two mid-ranges are built on the same RDNA 3 architecture as the high-end 7900 XTX and boast the ability to “deliver fully immersive 1440p gameplay (2560×1440 pixel resolution) at 60 Plus FPS”. Bold claim. The company continues in the announcement to state that the 7700 XT and 7800XT have 12 GB and 16 GB of “high-speed GDDR6 VRAM” respectively. This would give them “50 percent (more) memory bandwidth than the competition.” Naturally, there are several software features to further enhance the performance of these GPUs.

Chief among these is the third-generation AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution. This is a kind of upscaling technology that provides high-resolution visuals and ensures that games maintain a high frame rate. It is said to offer a huge overall performance boost. Super Resolution 3, as it is also known, is limited to a few games such as Cyberpunk 2077 and the coming Black Myth: Wukong. A full list of supporting titles can be found at AMD website.

Other notable software features include the AMD Radiance Display Engine for higher resolution on DisplayPort 2.1 and HDMI 2.1 based monitors, as well as improved encoders for better “streaming quality”.

Value for your money

One of the main aspects AMD focuses on with the new graphics cards is their value as a product. The company claims the two models offer “an average of 20 percent more performance per dollar” compared to their Nvidia rivals. During the Gamescom presentationAMD showed a chart comparing the RX 7800 XT 16GB model against it Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 12GB Card at maximum settings. As far as we can see, titles like Cyberpunk 2077 perform 23 percent better on the 7800 XT compared to the RTX 4070.

It did the same with the 7700 XT by comparing it to its Team Green counterpart, the GeForce RTX 4060TI. As before, AMD’s card should outperform Nvidia’s product on most of the PC games mentioned.

However, there are a number of drawbacks. This is reported by TheVergeReference designs indicate that the 7800 XT will occupy “2.5 slots width in a desktop” motherboard. The RTX 4070 only takes up two. Also, AMD’s cards have a bit of an appetite. The 7700 XT requires a total power of 245 W, while the 7800 XT requires 263 W. Again, looking at their Nvidia rivals, the RTX 4060 TI requires 115W of total board power, while the RTX 4070 requires 200W.

We won’t have to wait long before we get our hands on one of these cards. The AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT and 7800 XT will launch on September 6 and will cost $449 and $499 respectively. Keep an eye on our reviews. Looks like we’ve expanded our list with the best 1440p graphics cards for 2023.
