Amazon Games making cuts to ‘just over 180 roles’, internal email states
Amazon Games is making significant layoffs, according to an internal email shared online.
As reported by IGN And ReutersA memo reportedly sent to employees yesterday (November 13) by Amazon Games vice president Christoph Hartmann reveals that “just over 180 features” have been cut.
Specifically, the email states that following an “initial restructuring” in April, Amazon Games will deploy its resources in areas that have the “greatest potential to advance our business.” As well as “refocusing our efforts on Prime Gaming.” Recognizing that customers’ main focus is on the monthly free games offered by the service, the email states that the company is closing both Game Growth and Crown Channel.
For those unfamiliar, Game Growth described its goal as “reimagining how game makers promote their products around the world and reach audiences who will enjoy their content. Our vision is to enable gaming consumers to easily find and enjoy any gaming experience, on any platform, anywhere in the world.”
Meanwhile, Crown was an online streaming channel that often featured big Twitch names participating in gaming-focused content. At the time of writing, it has around 199,000 subscribers on Twitch and 7.54,000 subscribers on YouTube.
Towards the end of the email, Hartmann wrote: “I recognize that this is the second time this year that you are hearing about team changes across the organization and seeing colleagues leave, so let me be very clear when I say this: I remain confident in our future.”
Based on the email, it doesn’t appear that any cuts have been made within the company’s own game development and publishing departments (such as the team that made open-world MMO). New world), but without a full list to refer to, this isn’t entirely clear.
This year, several facets of the games industry have been hit by layoffs. Last week, Ubisoft has announced 124 jobs Cuts were made to IT teams and business administration services to “streamline our operations and increase our collective efficiency.” An unknown number of staff members are also affected fired from Digital Extremes.
