- United fans were quick to greet the ‘extremely professional’ Maguire after his sacking
Gary Neville has applauded Harry Maguire for his handling of the loss of the Manchester United captain’s armband.
Maguire, who has emerged as a target for West Ham, met United manager Erik ten Hag for talks about his future on Sunday and was told that as he is no longer a regular first-team starter, he would not continue as captain of the club.
Bruno Fernandes stepped in to lead the team last season and is expected to continue.
Maguire took to social media on Sunday to confirm Ten Hag’s decision with a lengthy statement emphasizing his regret as he showed his support for the next skipper.
And Neville, himself a former United captain, has responded to the post, writing ‘great response’ with a heart emoji.

Gary Neville left this comment under Maguire’s post while praising the defender’s response
“After talks with the manager today, he has informed me that he is changing captains,” Maguire wrote.
“He explained his reasons to me and although personally I am extremely disappointed, I will continue to give my all every time I wear the shirt.
“So I just wanted to say a huge thank you to the Manchester United fans for all their brilliant support while I was wearing the armband.”
Maguire lost his place in the team following Man United’s dismal 4-0 defeat to Brentford last August, which resulted in his Portuguese team-mate Fernandes leading.

The ex-Leicester City defender started just eight games in the Premier League last season and was ever present for the arrival of Ten Hag.
Maguire was keen to share his appreciation for former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who appointed him as skipper in January 2020 following the departure of Ashley Young.
“Since the day I took on this role three and a half years ago, it has been a huge privilege to lead Manchester United and one of the proudest moments of my career to date,” he added. “It is one of the greatest honors in club football.
“I’ve done everything I can to help United be successful – on and off the pitch. I will always be grateful to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for giving me the responsibility in the first place and I wish everyone who takes it now the best of luck and my full support.’
