Amazing moment heroic passers-by team up to rescue sobbing teenage girl from raging seas

A teenage girl sobbed with relief after being rescued from the raging sea by strangers who saved her life.

She launched under a sea wall and slipway in Bridlington, East Yorkshire, on the Bank Holiday Sunday evening.

Quick-thinking passers-by saw her in trouble and risked their own lives to pull off a hair-raising rescue.

They threw a life preserver at the teenager who had disappeared just after 6.30pm under the huge waves that battered the pier at Bridlington Spa.

Dramatic footage of the incident shows a man nearly being wiped out himself as he helped pull the youngster to safety.

Passersby saw her in trouble and risked their own lives to pull off a hair-raising rescue

She sobbed with relief as she was led onto the pier to be reunited with what is believed to be her family.

The girl involved was reportedly uninjured and is recovering from her ordeal.

A Coast Guard spokesperson said: ‘The Bridlington Coast Guard rescue team responded to reports of a person in the water near Bridlington Spa just after 6.30pm on Sunday (May 7).

‘On arrival at the scene, members of the public had managed to rescue the person using rescue equipment located around the harbor wall.

“The Coast Guard team has checked the victim’s condition at the scene.”

Jordan Grebby, Station Officer with Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team added: ‘There is no doubt that members of the public saved this individual’s life after they got into trouble just off Bridlington Harbour.

It is clear that the girl involved was unharmed and was recovering from her ordeal in Bridlington

“This incident is a timely reminder that the sea can look nice, but it can also be very dangerous.

“As we approach the summer season, it’s important to use a beach with lifeguards for swimming, but if you get into trouble, keep calm, try #FloatToLive and try to get someone’s attention.

“If you see someone in trouble, call 999 and ask for the Coast Guard.”

Those who viewed the footage on social media say the heroes deserve a medal.

One woman posted, “Watched this from my window. Those men worked together as a team. I don’t know if they even knew each other. Well done to you all.

Another commented: ‘Well done to those men. If it weren’t for them, it could have been a different story. The sea is so powerful. Glad she’s okay x.”

Another resident added: I am so relieved that she and her rescuers survived and I sincerely thank them. Well done to all involved.

“We pass that place so often and see children (and adults) standing on the wall. It is very dangerous there, especially during rough seas. I get so nervous every time we pass.”
