There’s a good chance that the American Music Awards ceremony will be canceled this year, according to a new report from Variety.

Both the American Music Awards (AMA) and the Billboard Music Awards (BBMA) have reportedly been scrambling to land a streaming partner.

And with the BBMAs already having a broadcast date of November 19, a Sunday that’s usually held for AMAs, parent company Dick Clark Productions, owned by Penske Media Corp. (company), is believed to parent company of Variety and Billboard) has no choice but to move the show up to 2024.

Despite all the chatter, a PMC spokesperson maintains that discussions are still ongoing for both awards broadcasts: “We have offers on both network and broadcast shows.”

Insiders believe that since PMC owns the Billboard publication, the company is opting to promote its own brand, which comes in the wake of talk that AMAs have become obsolete.

AMAs have been a staple on ABC since Dick Clark created the show in 1973 after the network’s contract to broadcast the Grammy Awards expired.

As it turns out, ABC was allegedly unaware of the BBMA date change until it was publicly announced on March 15.

A source close to the situation revealed to Variety that no official decisions have been made regarding the contract renewal of the AMAs.

Launched in 1990, the Billboard Music Awards first aired on Fox (1990-2006) for 17 years, airing in early December.

The awards show was then blacked out for four years until it was revived on ABC (2011-2017) in 2011 and placed in a new May slot.

He ultimately moved to NBC (2018-2022), where he has remained for the past five years, occupying that May Sunday date.

But sources maintain that NBC opted not to partner with and broadcast the BBMAs this year and instead apparently focused on expanding its People’s Choice Awards franchise in the fall, which includes the new People’s Choice Country Awards in September.

The artist who holds the all-time record for the most American Music Awards wins is Taylor Swift, who has taken home a staggering 40 trophies from 47 nominations between 2007 and 2022.

The pop superstar’s first win was for Favorite Country Female Artist in 2008.

Most recently, Swift earned a six out of six during the 2022 ceremony, including: Artist of the Year, Favorite Country Female Artist, Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist, Favorite Music Video for All Too Well: The Short Film, Favorite Country Album, and Red’s Favorite Pop Album (Taylor Cover).

Tops: Drake is the all-time leader in Billboard Music Awards wins with 34

The King of Pop, Michael Jackson, is a distant second with 26 AMAs, with Whitney Houston in third with 22.

As for the Billboard Music Awards, Drake tops the list with 34 wins, all earned between 2016 and 2022.

The Canadian singer and rapper was also honored with the Billboard Artist Of The Decade award for the 2010s.

Taylor Swift ranks second on the all-time list with 29 BBMAs, followed by Beyoncé with 27 and Justin Bieber with 26.
