Newcastle United co-owner Amanda Staveley in legal battle with Greek shipping magnate over ‘£37m loan’
Claim: Amanda Staveley owns 10% of the football club with her husband
Newcastle United co-owner Amanda Staveley has denied claims she owes tens of millions of pounds to a Greek shipping magnate as the bankruptcy wrangling continues. Victor Restis has demanded £37 million because Staveley was unable to repay a loan taken 15 years ago.
Staveley, who owns 10 per cent of the football club with her husband, has said the amount relates to a £10 million investment by Restis in 2008, and what she owes is much less than the mogul claims.
By 2016, around £7 million had been paid back, leaving £3 million, she says.
Staveley’s attorneys last month filed an application with the Supreme Court to have Restis’ legal demand for “nullification” issued.
Restis said: “Ms. Staveley’s position that the debt owed is baseless has been misconceived.”
