Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito are arm-in-arm in Italy

Amanda Knox and her former lover Raffaele Sollecito have been reunited in Italy 15 years after they were arrested and wrongly convicted of the murder of Briton Meredith Kercher.

In a carefree photo, the couple were seen smiling as they visited the historic town of Gubbio — the same place they planned the day Meredith’s body was discovered in her room.

Nearly 15 years to the day of Meredith’s death, Mr Sollecito, 38, told: the mirror that it was “the best thing” to reunite with Ms. Knox, 35, after their protracted ordeal, which saw them wrongfully serving four years in prison.

Meredith, 21, was a University of Leeds student living in Peruga on exchange and was found dead on November 2, 2007, with her throat slit and showing signs of assault.

Mr Sollecito called the police after he and Mrs Knox, a roommate of Meredith’s, discovered her body the day after she died.

American college student Ms. Knox, then 20, and her Italian boyfriend, Mr. Sollecito, who was 23, were arrested four days later and convicted twice at trial.

Both convictions were quashed due to a staggering lack of any evidence linking them to the crime. Also arrested was Rudy Guede, who ran a local bar. His bloody fingerprints and DNA found at the crime scene led to his murder conviction, and he served 14 years of his 30-year sentence behind bars.

Mr Sollecito, now a computer engineer in Milan, told The Mirror: “There was also something very light about it, Mrs. Knox saying, ‘Why don’t we go back to Gubbio?’

“She said we could go with her family after all this time and I could tell they had a lot of plans to do there.

“It was bittersweet going back because we had to go there under such different circumstances, but it was just nice for us to be able to talk about something that wasn’t the case.”

Meredith, from Coulsdon, south London, had only been in Perugia for three months when she was found dead with 47 stab wounds after the sexual assault.

In 2011, their initial convictions were quashed after experts told the Italian Supreme Court that major mistakes had been made in the first case.

A new trial began in 2013, and both were found guilty again, although Ms. Knox remained in the US.

Two years later, they were acquitted for the second time by the Supreme Court.

Judges said there were astonishing errors in the murder investigation and there was no evidence that the couple was involved in the attack.

Forensic blunders such as a contaminated glove were also discussed during the trial.

Despite not seeing each other in 10 years, the two kept in touch via Whatsapp.

During the trip to Italy, Mr. Sollecito met Mrs. Knox’s daughter Eureka and husband Christopher.
