Alphonso Davies attempted a spectacular Panenka with the game in the balance – and missed – as Uruguay defeated Canada in the third-place match of the Copa America.
The teams were level at 2-2 after 90 minutes, after Luis Suarez levelled the score in second-half injury time, only for Bayern Munich star Davies to put his side 4-3 behind in the ensuing shoot-out.
The left-footer caused Uruguayan goalkeeper Sergio Rochet to dive to his right as he fired the ball through the middle, but his shot hit the crossbar and bounced off the goal line, ending the match.
Davies reacted to his miss and the end of the Canadian tournament with his head in his hands.
Despite the disappointing outcome of the Copa America, Jesse Marsch’s team exceeded all expectations, reaching the semi-finals and escaping from a group with Chile and Peru.
