Alphabet chief picks up £182m pay deal

Google’s parent company boss receives £182 million pay package – while search engine giant lays off thousands of employees

The boss of Google’s parent company has landed a £182 million pay package – as the search engine giant is laying off thousands of employees.

The bumper payout, which is high even by US corporate standards, means that Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai earned more than 800 times what his employees earn on average.

Bumper pay: Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai earned more than 800 times what his employees earn on average

It comes as Alphabet is cutting about 12,000 jobs globally, about 6 percent of its workforce.

Earlier this month, hundreds of Google employees staged a strike at the company’s London offices in a dispute over layoffs.

Most of Pichai’s salary came from a huge grant of Alphabet stock that he receives every three years. Documents also show that the company spent £4.8 million on its personal security.

Alphabet and fellow tech giants Amazon, Microsoft and Facebook owner Meta will announce first-quarter results this week.
