A man has been charged after video surfaced of an allegedly stolen Alpha Romeo narrowly missing pedestrians during a dangerous suburban joyride.

The 26-year-old driver collided with a van at about 12 noon on Wednesday in Kingsgrove, southwest Sydney, drove onto a curb and repeatedly crashed into a fence.

After an hour-long chase, police stopped pursuing the red Alpha Romeo SUV just before it plowed into the front of a black Mercedes van.

The driver, who is reportedly without a driver’s license, faces six firearm and driving violations after being charged at Campsie Police Station on Wednesday.

In footage captured by onlookers, people chase the car as it zigzags erratically down a sidewalk, eventually coming to a stop after repeatedly crashing into a fence.

The locals drag the driver out of the Alpha Romeo and hold him down on the footpath, while a man holds what appears to be a metal pole.

A passenger in the Mercedes van said neither he nor the driver knew what hit them.

‘[The car] just came in, flew off the other side of the road and smashed into me and my brother-in-law. “He just kept going,” Ayman Bassal told 7News.

“We haven’t even seen him, haven’t talked to him. He hit us and ran away.’

The chase began on Wednesday after NSW police officers approached the driver in Sydney’s western Punchbowl as he walked toward the Alfa Romeo.

The red SUV is adopted reported stolen from a home in Pennant Hills.

The car was seen speeding down Payten Avenue in Roselands just before it collided with the Mercedes van.

The SUV quickly reversed and sped off again before crashing into a fence on Vanessa Street in Kingsgrove several times.

Officers from St George Police Area Command then arrived to arrest the man as pedestrians restrained him.

The driver faces six charges, including two counts of theft and driving without a license. He appeared in Bankstown court on Thursday.
