The pursuit by the police was soon called off because of the unsafe way the car was being driven.

But the driver kept going, colliding with a black Mercedes-Benz in the nearby suburb of Roselands and finally crossing on a footpath in Kingsgrove.

A video filmed by a pedestrian shows the car crashing into a black metal fence, knocking over part of it.

The car, clearly damaged, then accelerates away again, only to curve back into the same gate again.

People walking on the street can be seen jumping away from the path of the car and running into the street.

The driver then gets out of the car and tries to run, but is restrained and restrained by bystanders, one of whom is holding a metal pole.

Police confirmed they were on the scene and arrested a 25-year-old man.

When searched, they found a BB air pistol hidden in his pants.

He is expected to be charged overnight.
