Drink driver is found asleep at the wheel of a McDonald’s drive-thru after entering through a barbed wire fence

A man charged with drunk driving was reportedly nearly five times over the legal limit when he fell asleep behind the wheel at a McDonald’s drive-thru.

The The 35-year-old Paralowie man drove past Port Wakefield Rd in northern Adelaide around 5.30am on Thursday when he decided he wanted an early morning bite to eat.

As he entered the Bolivar fast food restaurant, police said he drove right through it a barbed wire fence, along the drive-thru.

McDonald’s staff called police after the man failed to place an order and they realized he was asleep.

WWhen officers arrived, the 35-year-old drove off before a highway patrol car pulled him into a nearby BP gas station parking lot.

“Police spoke to the driver, a 35-year-old Paralowie man, who they strongly believe was drunk,” said an SA police spokesman.

“He underwent a breath test, reportedly positive at 0.230 – almost five times the limit.”

His car was towed away and impounded for 28 days, police say.

The 35-year-old immediately lost his driver’s license for 12 months and will have to appear in court at a later date a charge of driving under the influence without due caution.
