Alleged carjacking suspect fatally shot by police at California ski resort

OLYMPIC VALLEY, California — An alleged carjacking suspect was fatally shot by police at a California ski resort near Lake Tahoe on Friday, authorities said.

According to California State Parks, the shooting happened around 10 a.m. near an event center that often hosts weddings in Palisades Tahoe. The identity of the suspect was not immediately released.

The park agency said one of its officers attempted to pull over a vehicle that had been involved in a carjacking in Tahoe City, about 10 miles (16.09 kilometers) away. A chase ensued, which ended in an accident near the event center.

The suspect, reportedly armed with a knife, got out of the vehicle and the officer opened fire, the parks department said.

Details such as where the chase began and the identity of the officer were not immediately available.

Palisades, the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics, is located on the western side of Lake Tahoe, approximately 40 miles from Reno, Nevada. A Jan. 10 avalanche killed one skier there, marking the first U.S. avalanche fatality of the season.
