All the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 news we’ve heard so far
Godzilla’s final return capped off an excellent first season Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. The Apple TV Plus series’ season ended Thursday night with the release of episode 10, and it gave us a pretty clear look at how the series ties into future Godzilla films. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for another season.
Unfortunately, we don’t have many official clues about the show’s second season yet, including whether it will actually happen. But until we get official confirmation of more Godzilla on the small screen, here’s everything we know Monarch: Legacy of Monsters‘ possible second season.
Will Godzilla: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 Release?
We don’t know for sure, but it often takes a while for Apple to confirm new seasons. The breakthrough hit, for example Disconnection didn’t get an official season 2 renewal until almost four months after the end of the first season. The other good news for Monarch fans is that Apple doesn’t often cancel shows after their first season, so it’s likely we’ll get a return for season 2. But we’ll have to wait for official news before we know for sure.
When would Godzilla: Legacy of Monsters season 2 be released?
Without confirmation that the show is definitely back, it’s probably safe to say that if we do get season 2, it won’t be anytime soon. Since the show hasn’t gone into production for a new season yet, we probably won’t get it until the second half of 2025, and maybe even later.
What does Kong do in the Monarch season 1 finale?
A great question – in a sense it’s probably there to play Godzilla x Kong: The New Empirethat is coming in a few months. But in the story, he’s just another titan passed on to our world.
The season 1 finale left everyone in a strange place – literally in the case of Shaw (Kurt Russell), who is trapped in Axis Mundi. Cate (Anna Sawai) and Kentaro (Ren Watabe) meet their grandmother Keiko (Mari Yamamoto), and together with May (Kiersey Clemons), they all manage to escape back to our world, only to discover that the situation has changed drastically.
For starters, Kentaro and his father are now working with Apex Cybernetics. And they’re very interested in evacuating the spot where the Axis Mundi survivors just landed, because Kong is angrily stomping through the trees nearby.
This may seem shocking, but technically Monarch is set in the past – nestled in the timeline just after 2014 Godzilla. By jumping forward in time, we are closer in universe to the events of Godzilla vs. Kong.
What is Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 about?
Depending on when it turns green, Monarch could remain the connective tissue at ground level between the Monsterverse films. It could possibly build a bridge Godzilla vs. Kong And The new empire, but it could also have to do with the consequences of the latter, if the series wants to jump forward in time. Regardless, the actors behind the main trio agree that they’re excited to see their characters take a more active role in the machinations of Monarch (and now Apex).
“I like that Cate finds purpose toward the end,” Sawai says of her character’s ending. ‘Cause she’s running from everything until then. And she’s kind of forced to find answers, and I think there’s so much potential in where she’s going. I hope if there is a season 2, we will see her take (initiative) and walk with the confidence that her grandmother has.
Clemons hopes a new season will have May “take responsibility for her actions” if it happens: “I want to see this put her in a position where she can choose whether she wants to be a person in power or not, and what she would if she had a lot of power.”
Considering how close May and Cate were at the end of season 1, season 2 could lean into their relationship – possibly (hopefully?) by making it more overtly romantic.
‘There is an attraction. But that’s not the focus of the story,” says Clemons. “It’s kind of cool because I feel like they just told us that this is where we might want this to go, and I think it just happened organically, you know? We kept that in mind.
“If we have a season 2, then so be it on”, laughs Clemons.
What other Godzilla content can I watch in the meantime?
While the wait for Monarch’s potential second season may be a long one, the good news is that there are plenty of great Godzilla movies to watch until then. While you can always catch up on the decades of films that have starred Godzilla since he burst onto the scene in 1954, you can also just stick to more modern fare. There is Shin Godzilla from 2016, but also from 2023 Godzilla Minus one. Of course, you can also go back to the rest of the Monsterverse to prepare Godzilla x Kong: The New Empirewhich will be released in theaters on March 29.
