Vampires are coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and that means the heroes need a vampire hunter to keep the night at bay. Sheet is one of the MCU’s most anticipated upcoming movies, rounding out a growing Marvel monster franchise, but it’s had a complicated production since it was announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019.
To help understand the director changes, casting announcements and delays, here’s everything we know so far about Marvel’s Sheet:
When is Marvel’s Blade coming out?
Marvel Studios’ Sheet has a release date of September 6, 2024. This puts it in the middle of Phase 5 of the MCU and about a year before the first of the next Avengers movies, which Sheet could play a role.
Sheet was originally scheduled to hit theaters on November 3, 2023, but was pushed back to the following year. According to a report from The Hollywood Reporterthe delay was mainly due to Disney replacing the film’s original director.
Who directs Blade?
Yann Demange, who previously directed for the HBO series Lovecraft countrywas announced as the director of Sheet after original director, Bassim Tariq, left the project in September 2022, just two months before production was originally set to begin.
Demange is expected to begin filming Sheet in Atlanta in the spring of 2023.
Who plays the main role in Blade?
The film stars Mahershala Ali, who is the headliner Real detective, The Green BookAnd Moonlight, as Leaf. Mia Goth (Pearl, infinity pool), Delroy Lindo (The good fight, Da 5 Blood), and Aaron Pierre (Krypton, The Underground Railway) have been cast unannounced roles.
Who writes Blade?
Nick Pizzalatto, the man behind True Detective – or at least the first three seasons of it. Pizzolatto has also worked on movies like 2021’s The guilty. This is Pizzolatto’s second time writing for a role to be played by Mahershala Ali, who also starred in the third season of Real detective.
What is Blade’s story?
That is unclear. Neither Marvel nor Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige has revealed any plot details Sheet yet. Presumably, Blade will face a threat hitherto unseen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: vampires (not named Dr. Michael Morbius)!
What is Blade’s connection to The Eternals?
Mahershala Ali’s version of Blade made a (voice-only) cameo appearance in a post-credits scene for The Eternals, in which Dane Whitman (played by Kit Harington), aka the Black Knight, opens a briefcase containing the Ebony Blade, a powerful, magical, and cursed sword. Off screen, Blade can be heard asking Dane, “Are you sure you’re ready for that, Mr. Whitman?”
While the Eternals seem to have more cosmic adventures themselves, it seems likely that Blade will stick to the good old planet Earth, possibly fighting alongside more street-level supernatural heroes like Black Knight, Gael García Bernal’s Werewolf by Night, Man-Thing, and Moon Knight from Oscar Isaac.
Is Blade a remake?
No, it’s more like a reboot. The first film adaptation of the vampire-slaying superhero began in 1998 with Sheetand went on for two more movies: 2002’s Knife 2 and that of 2004 Blade Trinity. That trilogy starred Wesley Snipes as Blade and was filled with bombastic vampire action, even featuring an entry directed by Guillermo del Toro.
Will Wesley Snipes be in the new Blade?
Neither Marvel nor Snipes have indicated that the original Blade actor would return for an appearance in Mahershala Ali’s Sheet, but it’s not off the table. While Snipes said he was surprised by Marvel’s 2019 announcement, he said in a statement at the time that “it’s ALL GOOD”.
“Much peace to the MCU crew – always a fan,” Snipes said in a statement Comic. “Honour and respect to grandmaster Stan. Congratulations and Salaam to Mahershala Ali, a beautiful and talented artist whose expressions I look forward to experiencing for many years to come. Inshallah we will work together someday. Most importantly for my loyal fans, the incredible outpouring of love is overwhelming. I am grateful for the never ending support. So, don’t worry, it’s not the end of the story. Welcome to the Daywalker Klique.”
