All the major announcements from San Diego Comic Con 2024
For people who miss the huge annual flood of news from the Comic-Con International Trade Show — better known as San Diego Comic-Con, or SDCC — part of the big news for 2024 is that this year, for the first time since 2019, the con won’t have an accompanying virtual or online event. That’ll leave fans looking for more ways to keep up with all the announcements pouring out of one of fandom’s biggest events of the year. But don’t worry, Polygon has you covered.
Marvel and DC are both heading into the big 2024 show with big questions to answer. Marvel has scaled back its plans for the Marvel Cinematic Universe after several big disappointments at the box officea new wave of “superhero fatigue” discourse, and the conviction and trial of actor Jonathan Majors, once the centerpiece of the MCU’s upcoming strategy. Comic-Con will be a preemptive victory lap for the company, with Deadpool and Wolverine in theaters from July 25, and now follow like a hit. But this year’s Marvel panel is also where we catch up on Marvel projects that have seemingly fizzled out, and learn how Marvel plans to revitalize its fanbase and reimagine Phases 5 and 6. Replace Kang with Doctor Doom? Replace Majors with another actor? Something else entirely?
DC meanwhile underwent a major reboot of its own in 2022, when Guardians of the Universe And The Suicide Squad Director James Gunn took over the company’s film and TV franchise, but Gunn says he won’t be at Comic-Con for a major DC presentation because he’s too busy filming his version of SupermanParent company Warner Bros. will have a small presence, representing the upcoming HBO series The penguin And My adventures with SupermanInstead of a presentation, DC will have a booth where it will try to generate excitement about new DC Comics merchandiseBut it’s always possible that DC makes a big announcement during Comic-Con just to stay in attendance.
Leaving those two big ones aside for a moment (and Disney, which is saving its announcements for later), her annual D23 expo), there’s still plenty of media activity at the con, with panels discussing upcoming franchise plans for Star Trek, Doctor Who, Transformers, Walking Dead and Alien, as well as upcoming seasons of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Powerand much more.
