(Ed. remark: This post contains spoilers for the end of season 3 of The legend of Vox Machinato talk about what season 4 could bring.)
Vox Machina is richer than ever at the end of season 3. They’ve been through the wringer; they’ve been to hell and back, literal; and one of them even died (for a not insignificant amount of time!). So it’s no surprise that they make big changes towards the end of the third season. Except we’re watching a show called The legend of Vox Machinaso you’d hope that one day they’d be back to the adventures that we know and love, you know.
And that day is soon! Or at least on the way: Prime Video announced Wednesday that it was picking The legend of Vox Machina ready for a fourth season. Which is good, because while that ending was more or less a good place to leave our lovely heroes, those weird hooded cultists at the end seemed to evoke something nefarious. And as Pike (Ashley Johnson) puts it, when danger surfaces again, who are they going to call?
Now that season 4 is officially underway, here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming season.
Is The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 coming?
Prime Video has officially confirmed a fourth season The legend of Vox Machina on October 23. What was to be expected: there were rumblings in May that SAG-AFTRA production lists suggested a fourth and even fifth season was in development. Moreover, being in the critical roles sector seems very good at the moment. The group is enjoying great success with dynamic, topical play shows and is realizing their hopes for more live shows go on a world tour. With other animated adaptations on the way (more on that below), Critical Role is really on a roll (I’m sorry), and season 4 only seems like the logical thing to do.
“We are beyond thrilled – and grateful – to continue the epic and wild adventures of Vex, Vax, Keyleth, Percy, Pike, Grog and everyone’s favorite character – Scanlan,” said executive producer (and Scanlan voice actor) Sam Riegel in a statement. “Every season, this show continues to level up, and we already have big plans to take both our heroes and villains to the next level in season four.”
When will The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 be released on Prime Video?
Between previous seasons, fans had to wait anywhere from a year to a year and a half. Those seasons have already been well in production in the past: When Prime Video acquired the rights in November 2019, it announced it would greenlight the show for more before Season 1 had even premiered. And ahead of the season 2 premiere, Vox machine was renewed for its third season.
Now that a renewal announcement is officially in hand, that’s possible Vox machine season 4 follows more or less the same pattern, meaning we can expect it sometime next year. But it seems likely that this won’t be until late 2025 at the earliest, maybe even 2026.
What would Vox Machina season 4 be about?
With a show like Vox machine – adapted from an actual feature series and compressed dozens of hours into about six hours of TV – there are plenty of options for where the story could take them next. But one thing seems certain: wherever Vox Machina ends up, they’ll face real problems with the person introduced in that final teaser.
We won’t go too deep into spoilers for the campaign (you can always go check it out if you want a full picture of what that last tease was about). But now that Vox Machina is determined to run their lives, it seems likely that they will be called back into action to take on this new enemy.
And life probably won’t be as simple as they all hope. While many Vox Machina members leveled up, battled personal demons and won this season, the finale promises that there may still be a cost to all that…
What Critical Role things should I watch while I wait for season 4?
Well, obviously there’s the actual Critical Role channel, which not only has a lot of original Vox Machina content, but also features the newer spin-off series like Exandria Unlimited: Disaster, Call Hellen, and more. They even switched from pure Dungeons & Dragons and developed their own systems.
There’s also the editing Mighty Nein enthusiasm that you can get started with. That original campaign is also on YouTube, but is also being adapted for Prime Video. No release date has been given, but Travis Willingham (who plays Grog) tells Polygon that production is well underway.
“We wrote the entire season 1. The storyboards will all be locked, if they haven’t already. So it goes to our overseas studio. We get animation tests back and see things come back into color. We designed all the characters. The magical spells and effects are considered. We talk about music, and how it will be different VoxWillingham said at Fantastic Fest. “So it’s definitely more than halfway done, and I think everyone is going to be very happy with the way it’s going to turn out.”
