All the Dune: Prophecy season 2 news we’ve heard so far
(Ed. remark: This story contains spoilers for Dune: Prophecy season 1.)
Dune: Prophecy blew it all up. Not literally, but in a season that started with careful backroom deals and manipulations, Prophecy‘s finale, in which all the maneuvering is made public, is a dramatic tonal change for the series. With Season 1 ending with Valya (Emily Watson) fleeing to Arrakis along with Princess Ynez (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina) and Keiran Atreides (Chris Mason), the table is certainly set for an epic war between the planets. (This is Dune, after all.)
And with some dramatic introductions and exits (more on that below), the path forward for the Bene Gesserit is in Dune: Prophecy is less clear than ever. So what will a second season bring for the Imperium? Here’s everything we know Dune: Prophecy‘season 2.
Is Dune: Prophecy season 2 coming out?
Dune: Prophecy will be back for another season. Warner Bros. announced that the show would return for Season 2 on Thursday, just a few days before the Season 1 finale. It was not revealed how many episodes this new season would consist of.
When is Dune: Prophecy season 2 coming out?
This is something else that Warner Bros. hasn’t announced, so we have no real idea when this new season will release. It’s technically possible that filming has already started, but quite unlikely. If the schedule works out this way, the show could return for another season next year. But it’s much more likely that we’ll be filming next year and ready for a 2026 release. This pattern would also fit similar recent Warner Bros. shows, including The last of us And House of the Dragon.
What is Dune: Prophecy season 2 about?
The show’s Season 1 finale provides a surprisingly clear blueprint for Season 2’s plot. For example, we know the Emperor is dead, and the Bene Gesserit will likely be blamed for that. We know that Desmond Hart is still alive, and that his eye is a robot that causes an infectious disease, and that discovering his true origins doesn’t seem to assuage his hatred for the Bene Gesserit either.
Meanwhile, in the home of the Sisterhood, there’s an uprising led by the spirit of a Reverend Mother possessing the body of a young acolyte – so who knows where that plot will go.
At the heart of it all lies the betrayal between Valya and Tula (Olivia Williams), with the latter having finally revealed that her son survived childbirth, and she has been hiding him – and now knows that he has become Desmond Hart. Hearing of such a major betrayal from a sister who she thought was aligned with the vision of the Sisterhood is, to say the least, quite a major upset for the couple leading the order. “It blew everything up, but I think Valya probably still clings to ‘I am the chosen one, I have destiny’ – (that) is still her guide,” Watson said at a press conference ahead of the final. “(And) I think Valya’s instinct is to run to the shadows.”
It’s certainly a change for the sisters, especially with Tula immediately arrested by her own son and his Imperium soldiers. With all that in mind, there will certainly be other plots set up in the show’s second season, but that’s a rather complicated place to start, to say the least. Especially since with the arrival of Venerable Mother Valya in Arrakis, it is not entirely clear whether she intends to stop a war or start one.
“After a season where Arrakis exerted his pull from afar (…) to actually put boots on the ground in this incredibly overdetermined and kind of almost mythical Dune space that we know very well, but we kind of kept him at bay the entire season,” showrunner Alison Schapker said at a press conference, “it’s very significant that Valya is back.
“All I want to say is: I think Valya is there; I think Valya will find out a lot more, since she’s pretty much back to where Desmond more or less emerged as an opponent. And (it will be) interesting to see what she discovers there.
Will Dune 3 release before the new season of Dune: Prophecy?
This is a very good question. Dune 3 is currently scheduled for release on December 18, 2026. So if all goes well, Prophecy season 2 could arrive sometime around September or October 2026, which would be a perfect lead-in to the release of the new film. On the other hand, if the timelines don’t add up, we could end up with a similar situation to what happened this year, with a new Dune movie hitting theaters and the TV show following some nine months later.
