Manchester United and Dortmund had been in talks for more than a week before a deal was struck between the two clubs for Sancho’s temporary move to Germany.

United will receive a loan fee of £3 million plus up to £3.4 million in bonuses, based on Sancho’s number of appearances and Dortmund’s qualification for the Champions League.

Dortmund will pay the majority of Sancho’s £290,000-a-week wages, although the Red Devils have agreed to contribute £100,000 to take the winger off the books at Old Trafford.

However, there is no option for the Bundesliga giants to re-sign the England international on a permanent basis this summer, having sold the 23-year-old to United for £73 million in 2021.

Nevertheless, Sancho is delighted with the move as it brings an end to a four-and-a-half month spell on the sidelines. The last of his three appearances this season at the end of August, after a public row with manager Erik ten Hag.

The winger’s refusal to apologize for his part in the feud has led to him training and eating alone at United’s Carrington training base. He has been separated from the rest of the first-team squad and has fallen further down the pecking order.

On his return to Dortmund, Sancho said: ‘When I entered the locker room today, it felt like coming home. I know the club inside and out, I have always had a close relationship with the fans here and I have never lost touch with those in charge.

‘I can’t wait to see my teammates again, get on the pitch, play football with a smile on my face, prepare goals, score goals and help qualify for the Champions League.’

Meanwhile, United confirmed the news on their official social media accounts, writing: ‘Manchester United striker Jadon Sancho has joined former club Borussia Dortmund on loan until the end of the season.

‘The 23-year-old spent four seasons with the Bundesliga outfit from 2017, where he registered 50 goals and 64 assists, before completing a move to Old Trafford in the summer of 2021.

‘Sancho has made 82 appearances for the Reds so far, scoring 12 goals in all competitions and winning the Carabao Cup in 2023.

‘Sancho will now temporarily return to Germany as Borussia Dortmund prepare to resume their Bundesliga season after a winter break. The 23-cap England international leaves with our best wishes for the remainder of this season.”
