A business owner has claimed a man armed with a hammer tried to break into his business in Alice Springs in the latest chapter of the crime wave gripping the Northern Territory town.

The business owner, who has not been identified, says four police cars were on the scene on Elder Street “quickly” and gave chase to the man.

However, the irate man complained that the suspect was not arrested or taken into custody.

He claimed the man had his hammer confiscated but was free to go, much to the alarm of the four “scared” women who worked in his business.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Northern Territory Police for comment.

In a video shared by community group Action for Alice Springs, the business owner claims he employs three women and a girl and was “disgraced” by rising crime levels in Alice Springs.

‘A guy came on the site and tried to break into our business.

‘We have four female employees, she has tried to break into our business with a hammer.

‘This place is totally, totally ridiculous.

They called the police. They attended quickly. They had four cars.

He explained that the policemen chased the man up the hill and took the hammer from him before letting him go.

Despite violence and crime being a part of life in Alice Springs, the situation has worsened in the ten months since the Northern Territory Government lifted alcohol restrictions.

Action for Alice activist Darren Clarke’s campaign made national headlines, forcing Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to pay a quick visit and impose partial alcohol bans.

During a brief visit to the city last week, Albanese announced new alcohol restrictions and pledged $48.8 million over two years for programs to address crime.

The measures implemented included a ban on the sale of alcohol to go on Mondays and Tuesdays, as well as limits on the opening hours of bottle shops.
