Ali Wong’s new Netflix animated show looks like all my high school dreams come true
In Netflix’s new animated series, Jentry Chau vs. the underworlda Chinese-American girl (played by comedian Ali Wong, who also serves as the show’s executive producer) must harness the supernatural powers she’s suppressed all her life in order to battle a bunch of demons from the underworld. The first teaser for the show reveals the legion of Chinese folkloric figures that Jentry must fight, all in vibrant neon colors, as well as Jentry trying to fit in and be Just Be Normal during the horrific ordeal of high school in a small town.
In short, this looks like a show I would have totally eaten up in high school (and well, let’s be honest, I will still eat).
“Sometimes finding your own identity comes face to face with your own demon,” series creator Echo Wu told Tudum. “There are different layers to what that means. It rings absolutely true in Jentry. She tries to find out what these powers mean to her. Are they part of her? Are they cursing her? You see this character trying to figure out who she is.
The show features an Asian-American star cast, including Wong, Bowen Yang (Fire island), Lori Tan Chinn (Orange is the new black), Lucy Liu (Kill Bill), and Jimmy O. Yang (Silicon Valley).
Jentry Chau vs. the underworld premieres on Netflix on December 5.
