I’m from Canada and I’ve figured out Australia’s ‘ugly’ solution to the freezing weather
A Canadian expat has revealed the ‘ugly’ solution Australians have come up with to combat Australia’s biting cold.
Alexandra Tuoheywho now lives in Victoria, was shocked when she realized that the ‘coldest [she] ever felt’ was living in a shared house in Melbourne in July, despite coming from notoriously icy Canada.
“It’s so cold in Australian homes that they’ve invented their own kind of clothing to survive the winter: indoor thermal clothing,” she said in a video.
‘Almost all houses [in Canada] have central heating [that] wouldn’t go out all winter. The houses are well insulated though, so it keeps the heat in better,” she added.
Alexandra identified three items that are essential for surviving the Australian winter indoors: an Oodie, Ugg boots and a Kathmandu puffer jacket.
“The Oodie may be the ugliest piece of clothing you’ll ever see, but it’s vital to surviving the winter,” the expat said.
Oodies are wearable blankets with hoods and a large pocket on the front. The loungewear is especially useful in Australia, where most homes are colder inside than outside in winter.
‘[The Oodie] will make you sweat uncontrollably unless you are in a room that is 15 degrees or colder, making it the perfect accessory to help you avoid catching pneumonia this Australian winter,’ says Alexandra.

Alexandra said Australians also need to protect their feet from the cold, and that’s where Ugg boots come in handy.
“As a Canadian, I didn’t understand the Ugg boot. It wasn’t warm enough to wear outside and my house was warm, so I wouldn’t wear it inside. But it’s the perfect shoe to wear inside a cold, cold Australian house,” she said.
Alexandra’s third and final winter accessory is the Kathmandu puffer jacket.
“It was originally designed for camping or hiking, but Australians are now using it for times when they can’t carry their Oodie,” she said.
‘So if you’re going to work, or to someone else’s cold house, a quilted jacket is the most appropriate piece of clothing you can wear.’
John Pabon, a Melbourne-based US sustainability consultant, previously told Daily Mail Australia: ‘When Australians complain that their homes are cold in winter, it’s not just a complaint, it’s scientifically proven.
According to the World Health Organization, Australian homes are consistently among the coldest in the world.
“They have a standard that says a house can’t be cold if it’s warmer than 18 degrees inside. Well, Australian houses, they’re completely missing the mark.”

Many Australians agreed with Alexandra’s assessment.
“I’m wearing my Uggs and avocado Oodie right now,” someone said.
Another added: ‘I love my Oodie. They now sell Oodie pants too.’
“The puffer jacket, also known as the Tassie tuxedo. We wear them to work, funerals… everywhere,” one man wrote.
“I come home from work, take off my Kathmandu jacket and put on my Oodie and Uggs,” another confirmed.
