Alexander Zverev did not have the luck he would have hoped for when he was struck by bird poop during their second round match at the Australian Open.

The world number 13 was left out of the tournament in Melbourne against American Michael Mmoh, who only entered the Open as a Lucky Loser after David Goffin’s withdrawal.

Zverev had won the first set and was 2-2 in the second, before things started to unravel.

Zverev was ahead in contention before being hit by bird poop during the second set.

About to take the serve, the German felt something in his hair and started to feel it and that’s when he realized he had been hit by bird poop.

He then looked down at his fingers and lowered his arms in disgust, before chuckling to himself as he returned to his chair.

An embarrassed Zverev then began to towel-dry his hair, as spectators watching the match began to laugh when they realized what happened.

World number 13 Zverev had to walk off the pitch to clean his hair when he realized what had happened.

While Zverev would have hoped this would have brought him good luck, in fact, it had the opposite effect.

Mmoh leveled things up in the second set when the German began to struggle with his service game.

Things didn’t improve for Zverev, who then began making a series of unforced errors as Mmoh pounced on his opponent’s weak second serve.

Zverev, who was the heavy favourite, scraped the first set 7-6 against American Michael Mmoh

However, the unseeded American fought back to claim the biggest win of his career to date.

Zverev only won 11 of his 42 second serves throughout the match as the American posted the biggest win of his career 6-7 6-4 6-3 6-2.

It is only the first time in Mmoh’s career that he has reached the third round of any major.

For Zverev it was a disappointing result in what was his first major since reaching the semifinals at last year’s French Open.

In his semifinal against Rafael Nadal, he withdrew three hours after the match after spraining his right ankle and tearing all three lateral ligaments, missing the remainder of the 2022 season.
