Alex Mucibabic, 49, accused of graffiti rampage on luxury cars across Sydney banned from paint cans and handed a late-night curfew

A man has been charged after he spray-painted nearly 90 expensive luxury cars.

The cars, parked on public roads in Sydney’s western and eastern suburbs, were this month spray-painted with their iconic logos in red or blue.

Alex Mucibabic, 49, was arrested in connection with the alleged shooting after police raided a home on Pyrmont Bridge Road in Camperdown at around 3pm on Friday.

Police officers from Kings Cross, Surry Hills, Eastern Suburbs and Leichhardt received 87 reports of luxury cars being spray-painted.

Central Metropolitan Region officers established Strike Force Opelika to investigate the incidents.

Police issued a public appeal for help in catching the man responsible and released surveillance footage of a suspect.

Photos of the luxury vehicles, including Porsches, BMWs and Mercedes-Benzes, were shared among Sydney residents as the number of sprayed vehicles increased between August 19 and 28.

On public roads, both new and older model luxury cars were targeted.

Mucibabic was arrested and taken to Newtown Police Station, where he was charged with 23 counts of destruction or damage to property.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the Parramatta District Court has heard that Mucibabic is expected to face further charges in connection with other cars allegedly involved in the case.

It was also learned that Mucibabic had been diagnosed with schizophrenia, that he could barely remember the alleged incidents and that he often heard voices in the evening telling him to go for a walk.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, he was given strict bail, but the conditions included that he “must not be in possession of paint pots”.

To get bail, he must report to Glebe police twice a week, attend a local mental health facility and avoid parts of town where cars have been sprayed.

He must also adhere to a curfew, which prohibits him from going outside between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Mucibabic will perform for the first time at the Sydney Downing Centre on Saturday 6 September.
