Alex Iwobi has revealed some of the reasons behind Dele Alli’s failed Everton career, revealing that the out-of-favour Toffees star could not be trusted by the club’s coaching staff.

Alli is currently recovering from surgery on an existing operation after his move to Besiktas fell apart and the playmaker returned to England amid controversy.

In April, the former England international was spotted with friends surrounded by nitrous oxide bottles, dubbed ‘hippy crack’, despite not being fit enough to play matches.

Now Everton midfielder Iwobi has explained the reasons why Alli’s Merseyside career failed to take off after being brought to the club by Frank Lampard in 2022.

“With him (Alli) he will say it himself, he is not a training player. Unless it’s a training game and you see Dele perform,” Iwobi said Dirty guys.

“When it comes to training matches, he’s a joke. When it comes to exercises, he tries, but because he is slow with it. When it comes to games, he’ll score and assist or something.

“It was difficult for him to play. If you don’t just do it in training, and at that time the manager needed reliable players.

“He (Lampard) couldn’t really trust him. We all know Dele could have performed,” Iwobi added.

The 27-year-old’s contract at Goodison Park does not expire until 2024, but Alli could leave permanently in the summer, with current boss Sean Dyche to decide on upcoming transfers.

Everton’s transfer plans are likely to depend on their Premier League status, with the prospect of relegation a realistic possibility heading into the final game of the season.

Alli has made just 13 appearances for Everton since moving from Tottenham Hotspur. He failed to score or provide an assist before being sent to Turkey on a temporary contract last summer.

His contract could be terminated if the club feel saving a transfer fee is not viable, with Dyche explaining that a decision will be made on the player’s future.

Alli initially joined Everton on a free transfer, but they must pay Spurs £10 million if he makes 20 appearances.
