Alejandro Garnacho hails a “dad-like” figure who has helped him establish himself in the Manchester United dressing room.

The teenage winger signed a new five-year contract with the Red Devils on Saturday, committing his future to United until June 2028.

The 18-year-old’s breakthrough season at United was disrupted by the ankle ligament injury he sustained against Southampton on March 12.

Garnacho scored four goals and made five assists in 31 appearances before the injury.

“From the very first day I entered the locker room, they really treated me like one of the guys,” said Garnacho.

“I’m the youngest on the whole team and so players like Lisandro Martinez who’s like – well I’m saying here he’s like my dad.

“He treats me like my father, when he has to tell me he does, and when I do well, he tells me I did. He always tries to help me with everything.

‘Then you have players like Bruno [Fernandes] who is very close to me. He helps with everything he can.

‘I’m also good friends with [David] De Gea, we speak the same language and he is a player I have a close relationship with and we get along very well. They all help me very well.’

The United rising star has been in negotiations for a new deal since last season inspired FA Youth Cup triumph.

There was thought to be a stumbling block over his image rights, but he has now committed his future to the club until the end of the 2027-28 season.

Ten Hag is looking forward to having Garnacho back in the squad for the run-up after the youngster’s breakthrough season was disrupted by the injury.

“He will partially return to team training tomorrow (Friday),” added Ten Hag. “Then we will have to see when he can go back to training completely, and again in competitions.”
