Surprise new Aldi Australia winter release sends shoppers running: ‘$1.71 a pop’

A wine expert has shared his ultimate guide to affordable new red wines for 2024, just in time for the cold winter season.

Aldi Australia’s wine expert and purchasing director Jason Bowyer put together his recommendations, with each bottle costing less than $16.

Popular choices include the Standing People Lighter in Alcohol Pinot Noir ($11.99), the Nerissimo Puglia Primitivo ($11.99) and the Mount Langi Ghiran Shiraz ($15.99).

The cheapest of the wines costs just $1.71 per glass.

Mr Bowyer says lower alcohol wines are becoming increasingly popular, making Standing People Pinot Noir all the more desirable.

The Standing People Lighter in Alcohol Pinot Noir 2023 (South Australia, Australia) – $11.99

He recommends pairing the drink with Aldi’s Emporium Selection Crumbled Camembert ($4.49) for a “toasted” appetizer or side dish.

Mr. Bowyer also enjoys the Truly Wildly McLaren Vale Nero D’Avola ($13.99).

‘A South Australian drop not to be missed, this berry red is sure to be a hit with family and friends and for less than $14 you better get in quick!’

The final Australian wine on the new winter release is the Mount Langi Ghiran ‘Pepper Series’ Shiraz ($15.99) from Victoria.

“This Shiraz features everything Australians expect from the Grampian wine region and is widely regarded as the best of the best when it comes to quality,” Bowyer said.

He paired the wine with Aldi’s Emporium Selection smooth blue cheese ($5.49) because they “go together like two best friends.”

Truly Wildly McLaren Vale Nero D’Avola 2022 (South Australia, Australia) – $13.99

The wine expert said those who prefer a fruitier flavor should try Les Argelieres Pay’s DOC Pinot Noir ($11.99).

“It comes from the cooler mountain regions of France and delivers a rich flavor with hints of raspberry and dark cherry,” he said.

Speaking of European wines, Aldi also just launched bottles of Nerissimo Puglia Primitivo ($11.99).

“Aldi shoppers eager to discover a new hidden gem can indulge themselves with this Italian red,” he said. ‘This celebrated wine ranks high in the Yearbook of the Best Italian Wines 2024 and is packed with notes of blackberry and dark chocolate.

‘It pairs beautifully with Emporium Selection goat cheese ($3.99). The creamy French cheese with a mild, spicy taste tastes delicious with fresh fruit or on a fresh salad.’

Another Italian wine expected to fly off the shelves is the Corte Carista Montepulciano D’Abruzzo DOC ($11.99), made by one of the world’s best winemakers: Alberto Antonini.
