A drunk driver crashed into four cars after celebrating removing an alcohol control tag with a Stella Artois binge.

Anthony Wilson, 34, ran off at a speed of 100 km/h when he was stopped by police but only got 200 meters further before hitting a parked car in Torquay, Devon in July, Exeter Crown Court heard. He continued for 600 meters before crashing into three parked cars.

Wilson, who admitted to dangerous driving, to drive unfit, to leave the scene of an accident and to have no driver’s license or insurance, was sentenced to 10 months in prison, a two-year suspension, a two-year driving ban and alcohol treatment.

He had only driven for a few seconds but caused thousands of pounds of damage and endangering the lives of pedestrians in Torquay town center at the height of the July holiday season, the court heard.

The road where he crashed contained two play parks and a social club, and a judge said it was a pure coincidence that no one was killed or seriously injured.

Wilson had just finished a three-month abstention order issued for previous offenses of criminal harm that required him to wear a tag that was activated if he drank anything.

He is an alcoholic who normally drinks 12 cans of Stella a day, Exeter Crown Court was told.

Paul Dentith, defending, said Wilson was shocked by his actions and determined to overcome an alcohol addiction that resulted from a difficult upbringing.
