Alan Shearer believes a few Aston Villa players were ‘not allowed to’ former manager Steven Gerrard, as the team visibly played with much more freedom in their 4-0 game against Brentford on Sunday.
Gerrard was knocked out by Villa after their humiliating 3-0 defeat to Fulham in the middle of the week, prompting Aaron Danks to take over as caretaker boss.
A goal from Leon Bailey in the second minute and a quick double from Danny Ings gave Aston Villa a 3-0 lead in the 14th minute, before Ollie Watkins extended the lead to four in the second half to give an exceptional start for Thanks to mark.

Somewhat surprised by the immediate transformation at Villa Park, Shearer suggested that a few players were unhappy with the former head coach and felt shackled by the old regime.
The Newcastle and Blackburn legend also praised Danks for making a handful of ‘big’ changes, including dropping Villa captain John McGinn.
