Alan Shearer believes Marcus Rashford should leave Manchester United if he wants to revive his career in England.

The Manchester United forward has been out of form since the start of last season and was therefore left out of the Three Lions’ 26-man squad for Euro 2024.

After scoring 30 goals in the 2022-23 season, Rashford has scored just eight times in 47 games since then.

England and Newcastle legend Shearer, has told Betfair that he believes the attacker will struggle to return to the England squad unless he leaves Old Trafford.

The Match of the Day analyst said: ‘On current form I don’t think Marcus Rashford will revive his career with England.

‘I don’t know his mentality, or his training approach, but there is only one way back: training and having the right attitude.

“But from the outside, I think he should have left Man United and revived his career. He’s become very static for some reason and that hasn’t worked for him for a while.

‘Only Marcus can answer how much he wants to score 30 goals a season again.’

Erik ten Hag previously called Shearer’s criticism of Rashford’s form ‘stupid’.

After United’s 2-1 defeat to Brighton, Shearer said: ‘He’s played against Marcus Rashford two games this season and he hasn’t had a single chance on target,’ Shearer said.

‘Based on today’s results and the game against Fulham, the game in front of goal was not good enough.’

In response to Ten Hag’s criticism of his work as a pundit, Shearer reiterated his position and said he still stands by his words.

Shearer said: ‘I was very pleased and happy with what I said before the game about Man United and Marcus Rashford.

‘I totally understand Erik Ten Hag’s reaction, because the question was asked to him in his press conference about one of his players, and he has no other option than to protect his player. I totally understand that.

“But I stand by what I said, and for me nothing has changed compared to what I saw last weekend.”
