Former Alabama running back Ahmaad Galloway was found dead at the age of 42 in his St. Louis apartment on Monday, according to local reports. The cause of death has not been released, but a medical examiner is underway.
Galloway has been working as an eighth grade English teacher at Compton-Drew High School in St. Louis. The school’s principal, Susan Reid, said she was found dead during a wellness check.
“Ahmaad was always on time, very responsible,” Reid said. WVTM13. So, we knew something could be wrong. There was nothing disrupted in Ahmaad’s apartment, so we thought it might have been a medical problem.
“The medical examiner is working to find out how Ahmaad died,” Reid continued. “The family is meeting from different parts of the country before deciding on the funeral arrangements.”

A father of two, Reid rushed for 1,830 yards and 17 touchdowns for the Crimson Tide from 1999-2002 under coaches Mike Dubose and Dennis Franchione. He would go on to be a seventh-round pick by the Denver Broncos, but he missed his rookie season due to injuries he suffered at Alabama. He was later traded to the San Diego Chargers and also spent time in NFL Europe with the Scottish Claymores and the Frankfurt Galaxy.
His NFL career ended in 2004, but he returned to the game as a high school coach at Missouri.
“When Ahmaad came to Bama, he was humble, but mature beyond his age,” former Alabama offensive lineman Griff Redmill told WCTM13. “He was mature and very organized. I knew right away that he was a person who could be my friend for life.”
Galloway is survived by his sons, Austin and Aurbey.
“Ahmaad was always quiet and humble,” said Galloway’s sister, Kimberley Slaughter. “My brother loved soccer growing up and later loved his sons Austin and Aubrey.”
Galloway students are receiving grief counseling at Compton-Drew High School, where the classroom has been closed in their honor, according to Reid.
