Al Sharpton says Meghan Markle was mistreated because she was ‘black and worked in the C suites’

US civil rights leader Al Sharpton has claimed that Meghan Markle was treated differently after her “beautiful wedding” to Prince Harry because she was “black and worked in the C suites”.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, the reverend sought to defend the Duchess of Sussex who, along with her husband, has been criticized for claiming they were not given the same support as other members of the royal family because of the color of their skin.

It’s unclear from the interview who is saying that Meghan, who is biracial, is being treated differently than other members of the royal family because of her success.

But Sharpton also took the opportunity to speak out against British TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson’s column in which he said he dreams of showing Meghan naked while people throw feces at her.

Clarkson has since apologized for his comments.

The Reverend Al Sharpton suggested on Tuesday that Meghan Markle was “treated differently” because she was black and worked in an executive position within the royal family.

In the interview on Tuesday morning, Sharpton said that while Meghan’s 2018 wedding to Prince Harry seemed to be universally celebrated, she soon became a victim of racism.

“I think when they got married it was a beautiful day,” the reverend told a panel of co-hosts. ‘And people were celebrating how, you saw this woman of color now in the royal family, gospel songs [were] sung at the ceremony and the Queen sitting there.

‘And the reaction was so, so acrimonious. And he just seeks to treat her differently,’ she said. “And people who, whether in the UK or around the world, are always treated differently, understood what Meghan was going through.

“It was someone black working in the C-suites for the first time,” he said, stating that Markle was the first black person to hold an executive position in the royal family. And they treat you differently.

She concluded: “I think she became a symbol that she didn’t create herself.”

The reverend then condemned British TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson for writing a column in The Sun newspaper in December.

He had written that he hated the Duchess of Sussex ‘on a cellular level’ and said he dreamed of her parading naked through British cities ‘while the crowds chanted ‘Shame!’ and throw heaps of excrement at it.’

The TV presenter later apologized for his comments, saying he emailed the couple on Christmas Day to say his language in the column had been “embarrassing” and that he was “deeply sorry”.

He said he should have had another writer read his column before submitting it. He also insisted that it is not sexist “and I abhor violence against women and yet it seems that I am advocating for just that.”

“So I wrote to everyone who works with me telling them how sorry I am and then on Christmas morning I emailed Harry and Meghan in California to apologize to them as well.

“I was taken aback by what they had been saying on TV, but the language I used in my column was shameful and I am deeply sorry,” Clarkson said.

But Sharpton did not appear to accept the apology, calling his article “mean.”

The reverend said that people can always apologize for things they’ve said, but what makes you feel like you can say that in the first place?

“And I think in many ways they exposed what was already there,” Sharpton concluded. “And then people try to blame Meghan for being exposed.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have come under fire in recent months after claiming the royal family treated Meghan Markle differently because of her race.

Harry has since denied calling the royal family racist but said they were guilty of “unconscious bias” while discussing Meghan’s controversial claim to Oprah that an unnamed royal had expressed “concern” over the color of her Archie skin.

Winfrey had asked Meghan in 2021: ‘TWere you worried that if he was too dark, that would be a problem? Are you saying that?’ Markle responded, “If that’s the assumption you’re making, I think she feels pretty safe, which was really hard to understand, right?”

It sparked a worldwide guessing game about the eldest royal who said it and hours later Harry’s estranged brother Prince William was forced to comment publicly that they were “not a racist family at all”. The Queen also made an unusual statement, saying “the issues raised, particularly that of race, are worrying” but stressed that “recollections may vary.”

But in another incendiary interview to promote his new memoir, Harry said the royal family is not racist.

British broadcaster Tom Bradby tried to clarify the comments, saying: You accused members of your family of racism.

But Harry snapped back, ‘No, I didn’t. The British press said that. Has Meghan ever mentioned that they are racist?

The duke then insisted that comments made about his son Archie’s skin color were “unconscious bias”.

He then went on to accuse Buckingham Palace of failing to deliver on promises to appoint a ‘diversity czar’.

Harry claimed that there is a place for the monarchy in the modern world if they address unconscious biases.

“I think the same process that I went through with regard to my own unconscious bias would be very beneficial to them,” he told Good Morning America last month.

‘It is not racism, but unconscious bias, if it is not confronted, if it is not learned and cultivated, that can become racism.

“But there was a huge missed opportunity with my wife.”
