Wins in the 2023 competition include English and Arabic digital content.
The Al Jazeera Media Network has won nine Shorty Awards – two gold, one silver, three bronze and three audience awards – in its 15th annual awards honoring excellence in online media.
The winners were announced on May 24 in New York City.
Al Jazeera’s Digital Division won two top awards in the news and media category for the AJ English Twitter team and the podcast news and politics category for current affairs podcast The Take.
News and current affairs program Start Here also won a silver Shorty in the news and media category, and AJ+ Arabic, French, Spanish and English won a bronze news and media award for their combined coverage of the assassination of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh by Israeli troops.
Al Jazeera’s investigative unit – the I-Unit – also won a bronze award in the podcast news and politics category for The illusion of truth.
Other Arabic language groups and units of Al Jazeera Digital also received awards with the cartoon series Arabic Net Mansy winning both a bronze prize and a public prize in the interaction and digital stories category.
Digital Newsroom (DNR), meanwhile, won two audience awards for its Arabic-language Instagram and YouTube channels.
The Shorty Awards serve as an annual benchmark for evaluating the performance of websites and personal accounts with the most impact and engagement on social media.
Since 2008, media organizations and international production companies have competed in 148 categories for these awards. A ceremony will be held on November 23 to honor the winners.
