A Briton accused of being a terrorist in the Middle East has appeared in court today charged with terror offences and was remanded in custody.

Aine Leslie Davis, 38, also known as Aine Leslie Rodrigues and Hamza Davis, was arrested after his flight from Turkey landed at Luton Airport last night.

This morning he was charged with offences contrary to sections 15, 17 and 57 of the Terrorism Act 2000. The first two charges relate to fundraising for the purposes of terrorism and the final charge relates to possession of a firearm for terrorist purposes.

London-born Davis appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ this morning. He was flanked by two detectives for his brief appearance in the dock where he spoke to confirm his name and date of birth before the charges were read out by the clerk of the court.

Davis, wearing a grey prison issue track suit, showed no emotion as he looked around the courtroom. He stood with his hands clasped behind his back as the three charges were read out. 

His lawyer Matt Foot said he would not be making a plea on his behalf and no application for bail. He was remanded in custody and will next appear at the Old Bailey on September 2 for a pre-trial hearing.

An armoured police van brought him to the court from a south London police station at after 9am.  The blue vehicle was followed into the underground car park by a Mercedes car containing anti-terrorism officers. The convoy left again around 11am and is likely to have taken him to Belmarsh Jail.

Although no bail application was made, the district judge Paul Goldspring told Davis he would have denied bail as he was at risk of re-offending and also fail to surrender to bail.

Last night officers from the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command arrested Davis at Luton Airport after he arrived into the UK on a flight from Turkey. 

A spokesman for the CPS Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division said: ‘Mr Davis, 38, has been charged with terrorism offences and possession of a firearm for a purpose connected with terrorism.

‘The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against Mr Davis are active and that he has the right to a fair trial.’

A Home Office spokesperson said: ‘We will always ensure the safety and security of the UK, and will not allow anything to jeopardise this.’

‘We can confirm that a British national has been deported from Turkey to the UK, but it would be inappropriate to comment further while police enquiries are ongoing.’
