AI jobs are among the fastest growing in Britain
- According to the LinkedIn report, AI and sustainability are some of the most sought-after features
- By 2030, workers will need brand new skills for many roles
- Upskilling efforts will prove critical to a successful workforce
New research from LinkedIn has revealed the impact artificial intelligence is having on the job market, with AI engineers and researchers now among the fastest growing jobs in Britain.
The social networking and job search platform also revealed the increasing importance of sustainability, with environmental officer positions also featuring in the top 20.
Emerging positions are great news for the job market. Further data from LinkedIn shows that hiring is slowing as the market continues to struggle, fueled by economic challenges and skills shortages.
Your best job opportunity could be in AI
Finding a job has been a challenge for many since the pandemic, with companies often introducing hiring bans due to rising costs. Return-to-office mandates have also affected people’s willingness to apply for certain positions. But perhaps the biggest factor is the global skills shortage.
LinkedIn estimates that the skills required for jobs in Britain could change by as much as 65% by 2030 (compared to 2016), with new roles being added all the time. More than half (55%) of the roles featured in LinkedIn’s UK Jobs on the Rise rankings didn’t exist 25 years ago.
“New AI and sustainability roles are redefining work, but competition for these roles and the need for upskilling are adding pressure,” said Janine Chamberlin, head of LinkedIn UK.
Adapting to and preparing for new positions is now top of mind for employees. One in five British workers fear they don’t have the skills they will need in the future, and hiring companies agree. Finding candidates with technical skills (43%) and sustainability skills (19%) are among the biggest challenges faced by HR employees.
Chamberlin added that companies looking to make the most of the opportunities offered by new technologies should focus on upskilling their employees and giving them access to more adequate tools.
