AFL star Toby Greene left with serious health problem after getting common souvenir on Thailand trip

A simple henna tattoo while on vacation in Thailand gave Captain Toby Greene of the Greater Western Sydney Giants a leg infection so severe that he immediately flew home.

Greene’s former agent Mel Oberhofer confirmed her client’s brush with a medical disaster when she appeared on ex-footy player Tommy Sheridan’s podcast this week.

Sheridan, who was also a client of Oberhofer in his playing days, brought up the subject to explain why the agent was so good at her job.

“I’m going to read you why people love you,” Sheridan said.

That’s the story Greene’s former agent Mel Oberhofer, who worked for Connors Sports Management, confirmed in an interview on Tuesday.

“Toby Greene has given me permission to say this. He will never forget how much care you took for him and all your players; you would always go further.

“He will never forget what time you picked him up from the airport after texting him with serious concerns as he boarded his flight home from Thailand.

He said, “There’s something seriously wrong with my leg, Mel.” He thinks you were at home and he’s running out of reception – he thinks that by the time he landed you were waiting for him at the airport while he was off duty on the plane and you rushed him to the hospital where you discovered that he had a serious infection in his leg.

“It was actually his birthday that day and he’ll never forget it; he thinks you calmed him down, you took him to the hospital.

“These are little insights that I’m sure will bring back memories.”

Oberhofer explained that the cause of the infection was likely a henna tattoo.

“Moral of the story: don’t get a henna tattoo in Thailand,” she laughed.

Oberhofer went on to say how proud she was to see Greene succeed in his career, with the GWS skipper now regarded as one of the game’s hottest players.

“Great footballer but would never go amiss, and now to see him become the captain and take on this role, it’s a proud mummy, big sister moment.

Greater Western Sydney will take on Hawthorn in the Gather Round in Adelaide on Sunday.
