AFL star opens up after his mum ‘had a few too many’ and stole the show by crashing two post-match interviews on live TV
- GWS shocked Port Adelaide to book the AFL preliminary final against Collingwood
- The players and fans celebrated loudly after the victory in Adelaide
- One of the players’ mothers became an Aussie icon for her water-soaked antics
There’s a lot of hype surrounding the ‘orange tsunami’ as the GWS Giants progress through the AFL finals, but the mother-of-one has managed to completely steal the show.
Mel Bedford, mother of GWS star Toby Bedford, has become an instant viral hit after a few drinks and crashing interviews after her son and his teammates upset Port Adelaide on Saturday.
The former Melbourne Demons star had a blinder for the Giants against Port, finishing with 16 disposals, three clearances and a goal assist.
Bedford was initially shocked when his mother walked into the live interviews, but now sees the humor in the situation.
“She probably had a little too much bubbly,” he laughed.
“The videos going around… she’ll probably be a little embarrassed, but that’s okay.”
Bedford initially tried to steer his mother away from the live interview with AFL great Eddie Betts on Fox Footy
But Betts was having none of it and dragged her in for a hug and a chat about her son and the Giants’ huge win over Port Adelaide.
Bedford was interviewed by Adelaide Crows and Carlton champion Eddie Betts as his mother Mel appeared in the background of the live Fox Footy feed.
Mel immediately tried to inject herself into the interview, but her son tried to politely send her away.
However, Betts was having none of it and pulled Mel in for a hug and to be part of the conversation.
“I couldn’t be prouder, I’m like… Giants, the green army is coming,” she said.
Betts then politely reminded her that GWS fans are called the Orange Army.
“Why did I say green?” she asked happily, followed by, “Collingwood is shaking because the earth is shaking.”
Bedford played an influential role for the GWS Giants as they booked a preliminary final showdown with Collingwood
Mel Bedford goes for round two, crashing into Channel 7’s desk and getting a sneaky hug from star Giants midfielder Stephen Coniglio
It wasn’t the only moment of the night that Bedford’s mother stole; she also shared her thoughts during a Channel Seven interview with star GWS midfielder Stephen Coniglio.
Ms Bedford quietly sat between Coniglio and former AFLW star and current commentator Daisy Pearce before Hamish McLachlan said: “Your son is a gun,” and gave her a high five.
She then gave Coniglio a hug and McLachlan switched to commercial and said, ‘Take Mrs. Bedford, we’re going to take a break. On the other side, the chaos continues.”
Mel’s parting words were: ‘Let’s go for the grandma! We got it, guys.
Her antics had AFL fans in stitches, with many taking to social media to praise her for crashing the interviews.
“Mothers have tanked. Imagine if they win the grandma haha,” someone posted.
“That would be me if my sons ended up playing AFL,” declared another.
“Haven’t we all had a Mel Bedford moment at least once in our lives?” asked another.
The Giants’ next assignment sees them tackle Collingwood at the MCG on Friday night with a grand final place on the line.
