AFL star Nathan Broad reveals how his proposal to pregnant wife Tayla Damir went horribly wrong

AFL premiership player Nathan Broad and his Love Island star wife Tayla Damir tied the knot in the Gold Coast hinterland last October.

And while their marriage went smoothly, Nathan has revealed that his proposal plans went awry and he had to wait weeks to pop the question to Tayla.

He continued the Ausmerican aces podcast he had originally planned to get down on one knee on the beach in Sorrento, and had even told friends about his plans.

But Nathan, 30, had to scrap this idea as Covid-19 forced him to an AFL hub in Sydney.

He eventually decided to propose on the porch of their house, where the couple would often drink coffee together.

But even this modest idea ran into obstacles, because on the day of the proposal, in June 2021, Tayla didn’t want to go outside because of the cold weather.

“I was planning on getting engaged to Tayla in Sorrento and have told a few people—and frankly probably too many people,” he began.

‘And then we were called to this mini-hub where we went to Sydney for two or three weeks. So that delayed those plans, and I was like, “Oh, f**k, I screwed up here. I’ve told too many people and they’re going to tell their partners or someone else,” so I was nervous. Luckily everyone was good to me.’

He continued, “Eventually I realized I just wanted to do it on the porch at home, where we drink coffee every morning, just something really low-key and simple.”

Nathan said he eventually got a reluctant Tayla out, but he was so nervous when it came time to propose that he ended up screaming the words.

Speaking on the Ausmerican Aces podcast this week, Nathan said he originally planned to get down on one knee on the beach in Sorrento and told a few friends about his plans, but had to postpone it when he opened an AFL hub in entered Sydney amid Covid. -19

“It was a freezing cold morning, we normally go for coffee, but not when it’s this cold, that’s just stupid. And I had to get it done, so I was like, “Let’s just go out for coffee,” and she said, “Things, it’s freezing, I’m not going there.”

“I started breathing really heavily and was acting really weird. And she said, “Are you okay?” And I’m like, “Yeah, yeah, you’re okay.”

“I just had to do it, pull the Band-Aid off, so I got up, turned around and I’ve probably been preparing this speech for five weeks about what to say, how much I love her, how wonderful she is, all these things, and I got up, got down on one knee, looked at her and was like, ”…will you marry me?” Just yelled in her face, ”will you marry me?! ”

“And I’m pretty jovial, larrikin, like I’m laughing — and she looked at me and said, ‘You’re kidding.'” And I was like, “No,” and yelled at her again, “Will you marry me?!” And she said, “Yes, of course.”

Nathan said the rest of the proposal was a “blur”.

The couple tied the knot in the Gold Coast hinterland last October, surrounded by family, friends and fellow influencers, all of whom were banned from using their phones while Tayla walked down the aisle.

The 25-year-old Love Island winner previously told The Herald Sun that she and Richmond player Nathan planned to follow the “unplugged” wedding trend by asking guests not to use recording equipment.

“When I walk down the aisle, I want to see everyone’s face instead of the backs of phones, so in that case it’s probably going to be a phoneless wedding,” she explained.

At the time, Tayla posted their gorgeous wedding photos on Instagram, alongside the caption, “Mr and Mrs Broad -17.10.22.”

In February, the couple announced they are expecting their first child together, a daughter.

Tayla also shared a photo of her ultrasound showing off her growing baby bump.

“Cooking for three!” she wrote in her caption alongside the image, which showed the former reality star standing by a stove with her belly bared.

The couple first started dating in 2019.
