A massive leak of private and personal images allegedly featuring more than 45 current and former AFL players is being investigated by the league and police.

A Google Drive file has been shared claiming to contain images of stars past and present, with screenshots, photos and videos claiming to be of AFL players, including Brownlow Medalists.

A number of clubs reportedly contacted the AFL when the footage began to circulate.

“The AFL has been made aware of private and personal images of past and current AFL players that have been illegally distributed and shared without permission after being contacted by a number of AFL clubs,” a spokesman said.

“The images have been distributed by an anonymous person(s) and it is claimed that the files contain private and personal images of past and current AFL players, but it is important to note that many of the images have yet to be verified for identification .’

The file link lists each player’s name, which is accompanied by a folder of explicit, graphic photos and images supposedly belonging to them.

“A lot of work seems to have gone into collecting the images and creating files for distribution,” the AFL spokesperson said.

“The AFL has no information as to why the personal images were illegally distributed without permission or what the motive is.”

The AFL Players’ Association labeled the sharing of the footage a “terrible and abhorrent act”.

“The AFL Players’ Association is aware that the AFL is investigating a collection of explicit images of past and current players that have been distributed without their consent,” Chief Executive Paul Marsh said in a statement Wednesday evening.

While it is important to note that some of the images may not be legitimate, this is an abhorrent and abhorrent act and a likely unlawful invasion of privacy which is unacceptable.

“We ask the public to take this matter seriously by not seeking out or sharing any of these photos and to respect the rights and privacy of those involved.

“We will support our affected members through our legal and welfare services. This is now a police matter and we will continue to assist where necessary.’

The AFL’s Integrity Unit has been working with the eSafety Commissioner for the past 15 hours to remove the images from the internet, while police in multiple states have been alerted.

“While the AFL understands that there may be significant interest in this update, it would like to emphasize that the images have been shared illegally and without permission,” the AFL spokesman said.

The AFL asks everyone to respect the rights and privacy of past and present players whose personal images have been illegally shared without their consent or approval.

“AFLIU has contacted the eSafety Commissioner and is working closely with eSafety to have the images removed as soon as possible.

“The AFL has also notified the relevant law enforcement agencies of the situation.”
